How long is ABPN certification good for? ›

Beginning January 1, 2012, all certificates are dependent upon continuous maintenance of certification based on a three-year cycle of requirements with certificates being valid as long as they are maintained. The examination cycle remains at ten years.

Specialty Certification in Psychiatry

The ABPN is a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). ABMS sets the general standards for its 24-member boards and the ABPN creates and implements the programs for psychiatry, neurology, and their ACGME-recognized subspecialties.

Graduates may take the ABPN certification examination as many times as allowed during the 7-year period. Certification examinations are offered once a year.

The pass rates for the ABPN Neurology board exams range from 80% upwards. These statistics are directly from the ABPN website.

The passing standards are not norm-referenced; there is no predefined passing rate for any group of examinees. No candidate is expected to obtain a perfect score. However, in the opinion of the ABPN, each candidate should have some degree of familiarity with the subject matter of each question.

To qualify to sit for examination, an applicant must:

Be a graduate of an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada or of an international medical school listed by the World Health Organization.

Score reports are posted electronically in individual physicians' Physician Portal (specialty certification examinations) or mailed to the candidate. This phase typically takes approximately 2 weeks.

What happens if I fail the MOC examination? Diplomates will be allowed to retake the examination within one year of the failed examination without change in Board certification status. If the diplomate fails the MOC examination on the second attempt, he/she will be reported as "Not Certified".

The overall competitiveness level of psychiatry is Low for a U.S. senior. With a Step 1 score of 200, the probability of matching is 80%. With a Step 1 score of >240, the probability is 90%.

Current diplomates who have 10-year certificates that are expiring must enroll in the program before their certificate expires by registering for their first assessment in order to continue their certification. However, they must continue to maintain all other program requirements on an ongoing basis.

To remain Board-certified, pediatricians must complete a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) exam components every 10 years, BUT certain parts of the MOC must be completed well BEFORE the 10 year mark (more on that below).

You must renew your California Physician's and Surgeon's License every two years. Licenses expire at 11:59 p.m. on the expiration date, which is the last day of the month in which it was issued. There is no grace period. It is illegal to practice medicine with an expired license.

The Article-Based Continuing Certification Pathway (ABCC) is an online alternative option to the traditional ten-year recertification exam. Diplomates will complete a set of article exams every 3-year block for each ABPN certification held.
