Game Recap: Baseball |
HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team used a seven-run sixth inning to fuel a 10-2 win over Cal State Fullerton to kick off Senior Weekend Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The 'Bows won their 14th game in the last 15 and 16th in their last 18 while reaching 35 wins in a season for the first time since 2010, the last time they made the NCAA Tournament. Through Thursday night, UH owns the third-best record nationally since Apr. 16 at 16-2.
Tied up at two heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Rainbow Warriors broke things open with a seven-run frame. Itsuki Takemoto delivered the go-ahead run with a clutch pinch-hit RBI single through the right side to make it 3-2. After a hit by pitch and a strikeout, Jordan Donahue and Jake Tsukada delivered back-to-back two-out, two-run doubles to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Kyson Donahue kept the big inning going with a run-scoring single through the right side before Dallas Duarte capped off the frame with an RBI single to left field, making it 9-2.
UH took the lead with a run in the first and another in the second on Naighel Ali'i Calderon's first career homer to make it 2-0. The Titans would answer back in the fourth with a two-out, two-run homer to tie it up at two.
Harrison Bodendorf got the start and struck out eight batters over 4.2 innings while allowing two runs on three hits. In his last two outings, Bodendorf has fanned 18 batters over 8.2 innings and also has 23 strikeouts in his last three appearances. Alex Giroux relieved him and got the win, shutting out the Titans over the final 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Tsukada led the way offensively going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs to raise his season batting average to .341. Kyson Donahue, Duarte and Matthew Miura all turned in multi-hit games while both Jordan and Kyson Donahue drove in multiple runs.
The two teams continue their series with game two of three Friday starting at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
