The Flower Market, symbol of Amsterdam (2024)

You may just be looking, but buying flowers of every colour imaginable has never been easier.

It is well known that the Netherlands is a country not only of diamonds and cheese, but also of flowers. The tulip, which first became popular here in 1594 after being imported from the Ottoman Empire, has become a national symbol.

Bulbs can be bought in many places but especially at this floating flower market, the only one of its kind in the world, as it takes place on riverboats docked along the Singel canal between Koningsplein and Muntplein. The market dates to the end of the 19th century. You will have rarely seen such colour, which changes according to the seasons. Thousands of fresh flowers are available for purchase at the stands, as are bulbs that you can plant at home in flowerboxes, balconies, or gardens.

The best moment to plant is between September and the beginning of December. Your flowers will break ground in spring.
