the firm Sys tem Technology Associates of Concord agrees to certain demands Richard Desmarais chairman of assessors said today that assessors are interested in getting the job our demands can be met give it one more Desmarais said know if they can meet the Desmarais said assessors will let the firm fin ish the job if a bonding company monitors work and if the revaluation firm provides asses sors with certain information that is used to determine new values Assessors accused STA in "May of defaulting on the contract for property revaluation and asked the Law Department to notify the bonding com pany that the firm defaulted Hampden Historical will hold an open house at the museum on Main Street Academy Hall Sunday from 2 4 pm problem that the consulting firm of Tighe Bond prepared for the school last year But Roland Dupois the deputy regional environmental engineer for water pollution con trol agreed with Littlefield that the university has done all it can and is waiting for action from the state government UMass has asked the state Legislature for money to fund a study of the problem to be con ducted by a consultant chosen by the Division of Capital Planning and Operation Littlefield said that state law requires a study channeled through DCPO Once the study is finished it must be reviewed by local interested parties including the Amherst selectmen and conservation commission before being presented for final approval to DCPO the state Department of Environmental Quality Engineering and the university Board of Trus tees Littlefield said The university must then ask for money to implement the recommendations he said The Tighe Bond report listqd three options ranging in cost from $600000 to $24 million The cheapest option involved moving the coal pile and pumping the contaminated water' from the site A more expensive plan involved placing a water tight lining under the coal pile channeling rain run off away from the brook and pumping out the contaminated water The $24 million plan also included the placement of a water tight cover over the pile A weekly swimming program for elderly people is being offered by the Springfield Council on Aging at the New North School on Birnie Avenue Elderly people are invited to swim free on Wednes days between 1 and 3 pm The council also has announced that hours have been expanded at the Mayflower Senior Center in Wachogue Church at 80 Arvilla St The center is now open daily from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm or more information about senior center activities call Virginia Thompson at 787 7323 Open House HOLYOKE City and business officials will go to Wang Laboratories in Lowell riday to get a briefing on the com operations Mayor Ernest Proulx said today Wang Laboratories is building a $175 mil lion manufacturing plant off Whitney Ave nue which will ini tially employ about 800 persons The plant is scheduled to be completed in the winter Wang Laboratories plans to open up a hir ing and testing facility for employment in this city soon A possible location is the former Holyoke Community College building on Sargeant Street The high tech com pany which builds word machines is a $3 billion which has more than 20000 employees world wide It is growing at a rate of more than 30 percent per year Proulx said about 12 persons are going to the Lowell plant including Thomas McColgan executive director of the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce ence involving Associate City Solicitor Robert Nowak Dickson counsel and Robert Riley of Boston the bonding attorney I Desmarais said the project is expected to take about four months to complete The board wants a new schedule from the company and once it is submitted no extensions win be given ne said He said the state Department of Revenue has told assessors that properties must be revalued at 100 percent market value in time for final fis cal 1984 tax bills Tax bills for the first six months of fiscal 1984 will have to be estimated he said
